How This Calculation Works
The roof shingles calculator first determines the roof area by multiplying the footprint area (length × width) by a pitch multiplier. Steeper roofs have more surface area — a 6/12 pitch adds about 12% to the footprint area.
Roofing materials are sold in "squares" — one square covers 100 ft² (9.3 m²). Standard three-tab shingles come 3 bundles per square. Ridge cap shingles are calculated separately based on ridge length.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting the pitch multiplier. A 6/12 roof is 12% larger than its footprint. Ignoring this means buying too few shingles.
- Not ordering enough ridge caps. Ridge caps are separate from field shingles. You need about 3 bundles per 35 linear feet of ridge.
- Skipping waste allowance. Add 10–15% for waste due to cuts, valleys, and damaged shingles during installation.
Worked Example
Scenario: A roof 40 ft × 30 ft with a 6/12 pitch and 40 ft of ridge.
Step 1 — Footprint: 40 × 30 = 1,200 ft².
Step 2 — Adjusted area: 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 ft².
Step 3 — Squares: 1,342 ÷ 100 = 13.4 → 14 squares.
Step 4 — Bundles: 14 × 3 = 42 bundles of field shingles.
Step 5 — Ridge caps: 40 ÷ 35 × 3 ≈ 4 bundles of ridge cap shingles.
