How This Calculation Works
The flooring calculator multiplies your room's length by its width to get the total floor area. It then adds a waste percentage — typically 10% — to account for cuts along walls, doorways, and obstacles like pipes or columns.
The total area (with waste) is divided by the coverage per box, which is printed on the product packaging. Different products vary: a box of laminate might cover 2.0–2.5 m² (21–27 ft²), while luxury vinyl plank may cover 1.5–2.0 m². Always check the packaging rather than guessing.
The result is rounded up to a whole number of boxes since partial boxes aren't sold.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the wrong coverage number. Coverage per box varies by product and even by SKU. Always check the box or product listing — don't assume all laminate covers the same area.
- Skipping waste allowance. Even in a perfectly rectangular room, the last row of planks will need cuts, and the off-cuts are often too short to use elsewhere. Budget 10% minimum.
- Forgetting closets and alcoves. Measure into closets, under radiator covers, and bay windows. These areas add up quickly.
- Not acclimating the material. This isn't a calculation mistake, but it causes waste: laminate and hardwood need to sit in the room for 48 hours before installation to prevent buckling.
Worked Example
Scenario: A living room measuring 5 m × 4 m. The laminate flooring comes in boxes that cover 2.2 m² each. You want a 10% waste allowance.
Step 1 — Room area: 5 × 4 = 20 m².
Step 2 — With waste: 20 × 1.10 = 22 m².
Step 3 — Boxes: 22 ÷ 2.2 = 10 boxes exactly. Buy 10 boxes.
