How This Calculation Works
This calculator multiplies your bill amount by the tip percentage to find the tip, then adds that to the bill to get the total. If you're splitting the bill among a group, it divides the total evenly across the number of people to show exactly what each person owes.
Tip percentage norms vary by service type and region. In the United States, 15–20% is standard for full-service restaurants, with 20%+ common for excellent service. Other services — delivery, salons, taxis — often follow different customary ranges, so it's worth adjusting the percentage based on context.
When splitting a bill, this calculator divides the total equally. If your group wants to split based on what each person actually ordered rather than evenly, you'll need to calculate each person's share of the bill separately before applying the tip percentage.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Tipping on the post-tax total inconsistently. Some people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, others on the total after tax. Either is broadly acceptable, but be consistent — this calculator uses whatever bill amount you enter.
- Forgetting that large groups sometimes have automatic gratuity. Many restaurants automatically add an 18–20% gratuity for groups above a certain size (often 6–8 people) — check your bill before adding an additional tip on top.
- Splitting evenly when orders were very uneven. An even split is convenient but can feel unfair if one person ordered a $40 steak and another had a $12 salad — consider itemized splitting for such situations.
- Not rounding for convenience. When paying with cash, it's often easier to round the tip or total to a convenient number rather than dealing with odd cents — this calculator gives the exact figure as a starting point.
Worked Example
Scenario: A $60 restaurant bill, tipping 18%, split between 2 people.
Step 1 — Tip amount: $60 × 18% = $10.80.
Step 2 — Total bill: $60 + $10.80 = $70.80.
Step 3 — Per person: $70.80 ÷ 2 = $35.40 each.
