How This Calculation Works
The side hustle calculator estimates your real take-home income after taxes and expenses. It multiplies your hourly rate by your weekly hours (× 4.33 weeks/month) to get gross monthly income.
Taxes for self-employment income include both income tax and the 15.3% self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare). Monthly expenses like software, supplies, or gas are subtracted to find your true net income.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting self-employment tax. You owe an extra 15.3% on top of income tax when self-employed. Budget for 25–35% total tax.
- Not tracking expenses. Business expenses reduce your taxable income. Track everything — tools, mileage, subscriptions, supplies.
- Overestimating available hours. Account for client acquisition, admin work, and unbillable tasks — they eat 20–30% of your time.
Worked Example
Scenario: Freelance design at $60/hr, 15 hours/week, 30% tax rate, $300/month expenses.
Gross monthly: $60 × 15 × 4.33 = $3,897.
Taxes: $3,897 × 30% = $1,169.
Net monthly: $3,897 − $1,169 − $300 = $2,428.
Effective rate: $2,428 ÷ (15 × 4.33) = $37.37/hr actual take-home.
