How This Calculation Works
The road trip calculator estimates total trip cost by adding up fuel, hotels, food, and tolls. Fuel cost is calculated from distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price. Food is estimated per person per day.
The total is split evenly among travelers to show the per-person cost. You can adjust each category to match your specific travel style.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Underestimating food costs. Restaurant meals on the road add up fast. Budget $40–60 per person per day for moderate dining.
- Forgetting tolls. Major interstate tolls can add $50–100+ on cross-country trips. Check toll calculators for your specific route.
- Not budgeting for activities. Entrance fees, parking, and attractions can add $20–50 per day per person.
Worked Example
Scenario: 800-mile trip, 28 MPG, $3.50/gal gas, 3 nights at $120/night, $50/person/day food, $30 tolls, 2 travelers.
Fuel: 800 ÷ 28 × $3.50 = $100.
Hotels: 3 × $120 = $360.
Food: $50 × 4 days × 2 people = $400.
Total: $100 + $360 + $400 + $30 = $890. Per person: $445.
